Arizona’s weather can be brutal on cabinetry. The combination of low humidity, high heat, and intense sunlight pulls moisture out of wood surfaces, causing cracks, dulling, and even separation along joints. Protecting your investment requires consistent care — not expensive upkeep.

Start with routine dusting. Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth at least once a week to remove particles that can scratch your finish. Avoid paper towels, which can be too abrasive. Once a month, clean with a pH-neutral cleaner or a mix of gentle dish soap and warm water. Wipe lightly and immediately dry the surface with a soft towel.

Next, apply a cabinet conditioner or light polish every few months to help maintain moisture balance. Avoid silicone-based products, which trap heat, and skip wax polishes — they cause buildup and uneven color over time.

Arizona’s sunlight is another challenge. If you have west-facing windows or skylights, use UV film or blinds to reduce direct exposure. Sunlight fades dark finishes like walnut or cherry and can yellow light finishes such as maple and painted white cabinets.

Finally, keep your home’s humidity between 35%–45%. A small humidifier during winter can prevent wood shrinkage and joint cracking. And every five to seven years, a professional refinishing or sealant refresh will bring back that like-new sheen and keep your cabinets protected for decades.

How to Protect Cabinet Finishes in Arizona’s Dry Climate

Keep your cabinetry from cracking, fading, or warping under Arizona’s intense sun and low humidity.

Arizona’s climate is both stunning and punishing. The same sunlight that fills your kitchen with warmth can quietly dry out your cabinetry. Heat, low humidity, and UV exposure pull moisture from wood fibers, causing finishes to dull, crack, or separate over time.
